Hope Glen Farm Wedding Photography | Ben + Marissa

By Joanna Carina

Hope Glen Farm Wedding

Ben + Marissa had a picture-perfect wedding day at Hope Glen Farm in Cottage Grove MN. The sky had only a few fluffy clouds and the grounds were perfect. I was so excited to be their wedding photographer!

They began prepping for their big day at the farm. When they were finished with their preparations, we held their first look under a shady tree near the back of the large barn. We spent some time with the two of them taking portraits together. Once their portraits were complete, we held their wedding party photos as well as their family photos. Then it was time to gather in the Corn Crib to prepare for their wedding ceremony.

MN Farm Wedding Ceremony

Ben + Marissa’s wedding ceremony was held outdoors on the grounds of Hope Glen Farm, near the new vineyard and looking to their new vine pergola with crystal chandelier. Marissa’s cousin Anton was their officiant, ensuring a very personalized ceremony. Once their ceremony was complete, they headed back to the Corn Crib to toast with their wedding party and sign the marriage license.

MN Farm Wedding Reception

Ben + Marissa headed out to join their cocktail hour and share drinks, stories and hugs with their guests. Guests especially enjoyed the bean bag and Jenga games. After their grand entrance, they began dinner and toasts. Ben’s dad brought laughter and tears by surprising them with a guitar song.

After their dinner, Ben + Marissa held their first dance along with dances with both of their mothers. Fun continued into the night with dancing, desserts and an addictive game of Minnow Racing.

Thank You!

Ben + Marissa, thank you so much for working with me as your wedding photographer. I had such an awesome time on your wedding day, and I wish you both the best in your life together!

Brewery + Farm Wedding Photography | Stacia + Tyler

By Joanna Carina

Brewery Wedding Ceremony

Stacia + Tyler had an amazing wedding day planned. They were going to have both a brewery AND Stacia’s family farm wedding. Coming from a family with a farm too, I had a special place in my heart for their big day. I was so incredibly excited when they decided to hire me as their wedding photographer!

Their day began down in Northridge Iowa. They prepared for their big day at both Worth Brewing Company as well as across the street at their friend’s store, Fringe & Lace. Once the two of them were ready, they decided they wanted to drive over to a beautiful vineyard near the edge of town for their first look. The area was small but stunning! From there, we headed over to the main park in town for a few more photos of them as well as photos with their wedding party. And finally we headed up to Worth Brewing for family photos before the ceremony.

After their beautiful ceremony, they had a cocktail hour in the main brewery. Then dinner and toasts were back upstairs in the party room. Once the brewery celebration was complete, we headed up to Hayward MN for their family farm reception.

Family Farm Wedding Reception

Stacia + Tyler’s reception was held at Stacia’s family farm in Hayward MN. The party and dancing was held in the large shed, and there was plenty of space to wander around and capture more photos of the two of them as well. After dancing had begun, they had the added bonus of candle-lit lanterns once it was dark. And then we followed with a sparkler exit as well.

Thank You!

Stacia + Tyler, thank you so much for including me as your wedding photographer on one of the biggest days of your lives. I am so happy for you as you begin your new lives together!

If you are planning a brewery or farm wedding, contact me soon to discuss how we could work together!

Top 10 Tips for Barn Weddings | Carina Photographics

By Joanna Carina

Barn Wedding Tips and Advice

Considering a barn wedding? Unsure how to manage all the details of a barn wedding? Today I’m turning my blog post over to the top barn and tent wedding expert in the Twin Cities, Rustic Elegance. My friend Kellie Heinen, owner of Rustic Elegance, was happy to offer some of her best advice to couples planning a barn wedding. Take it away Rustic Elegance!

Barn Wedding Tips Rustic Elegance Kellie Heinen

Minnesota Barn Weddings

Planning a wedding can be S T R E S S F U L. There are SO many things to think about – your wedding party, budget, food/beverage, etc. After enjoying some time engaged to your future life partner, one of the first orders of business that every couple will have to decide on is the venue. From hotels, golf courses, event centers, etc., every couple has a venue style that they can envision themselves tying the knot in. One of the latest crazes in the wedding world is getting married in a barn, one that has been transformed into a beautiful wedding venue.

At Rustic Elegance, we are fortunate to specialize in backyard, tent, barn, vineyard, and orchard weddings. We love working with these types of venues. They start as a blank canvas and may require more planning then if you held your event at a full-service hotel or restaurant. Being in business for over 5 years, we have come up with our top 10 tips for hosting barn weddings, and Minneapolis wedding photographer Carina Photographics has asked us to share them with you.

TOP 10 TIPS FOR HOSTING A BARN WEDDING

1. Climate Control

You might not think about this right away, but many barn wedding venues will face the outdoor elements because of the different seasons throughout the year. If you’re planning on getting married in the scorching summer months, you might want to think about adding some fans or renting an AC unit to ensure guests are comfortable. Also confirm with the venue if they have air conditioning as an option – there are a few out there. If you’re planning a fall/winter wedding at a barn, consider having space heaters or renting a blow-in-heating unit, so nobody will have to endure the harsh MN/WI winter during such a heart-warming day!

MN Barn Wedding Photo

2. Back Up Ceremony

Many barn venues have B E A U T I F U L outdoor options for ceremony sites, or a barn that can start as a ceremony site, where your guests are then invited outside for a cocktail hour, and the barn is then transformed into your beautiful reception venue. While outdoor options for ceremonies and cocktails hours are fantastic – there is always the chance of weather getting in the way. When planning a barn wedding, have a back-up plan if utilizing outdoor space. Also, think about who is going to help initiate a back-up plan once you have one, including ensuring guests are dry and safe, and moving any previously set up décor from your outside space indoors.

3. Power

Many barn wedding venues are repurposed older barns, that were decorated and transformed to create a place to make lifelong memories from your special day. With the older barns, there may not be as many sources of power or outlets that you will need. Consider bringing a few extension cords or power strips to ensure that your vendors will have enough power to work.

MN Barn Wedding Photo

4. Flow of the Venue

Layouts of barn venues/the farmland are very different throughout MN/WI. Some have one barn, some have two, some have bridal suites, some do not. When visiting venues, consider the space and spending your entire day there. If you do decide to use the barn space for both the ceremony and reception, there will have to be a “flip” period, or a time when the venue changes from ceremony layout to reception layout. Also when thinking about utilizing this space, also question who will be flipping it for you – the venue workers, family members, or you could hire a day of coordinator [like us] to take all of it off your hands.

5. Location, Traveling and Hotel Bookings

If you are centrally located in the Twin Cities, chances are you will have to travel a little bit into the countryside for your wedding if you choose a barn venue. Also keep in mind that this means your guests will also have to travel, and some may opt to stay in a hotel. Consider booking a block of rooms at a hotel nearby for your guests, and providing a shuttle to and from, to encourage safe travels and further encourage dancing the night away.

MN Barn Wedding Photo

6. Decor

Barn venues have their own elegance throughout, created by the wooden beams, posts, and rustic décor that the venue has. With the venues permission, you will have the chance to dress up the barn to your D R E A M! A few things to think about when decorating inside the barn:

> Centerpieces – If there are going to be doors open at the venue, wind may try to blow away your décor. Think about heavier centerpieces, such as wood logs, heavier flower vases, etc., so that the decorations stay in place! Also, consider who is setting out the centerpieces [florist, family, you, planner, etc.] and who is gathering them at the end of the night.

> Lighting – Barns are typically only lit by a few overhead lights and may be seemingly dim on your initial visit to the space. To brighten the room [as well as everyone’s day], think about adding string lights across the ceiling or a chandelier over the head table, for a dramatic effect.

> Keep it simple – The barns that we have been so fortunate to work with are beautiful on their own with no decorations. Try to concentrate on the true beauty of the barn with light décor, or choose to focus on a focal point in the room.

MN Barn Wedding Photo

7. Dress for the Occasion

All barns have different surroundings. Some may be surrounded by grass and fields, others by dirt paths/roads, etc. Ceremony sites may be all grass, rock, or they may be in the barn itself. Either way, remind yourself and your guests to wear farm or grass friendly attire, especially footwear, for your special day.

8. Event Insurance

Some barn venues require extra “event insurance coverage” to host your event at their venue. This is extra event insurance, in case there were anything to go wrong. This may be an added fee to your budget, so it’s something to keep in mind. Check with your venue or planner to verify.

MN Barn Wedding Photo

9. Vendors and Day-of Coordinators

Unlike hotels, event centers, or golf courses, most barn venues do not have an in-house caterer, bartender, or coordinator, which means that you will have to outsource for these vendors. When deciding on vendors to help with you day, it is important to choose vendors that have experience with the outdoor/barn type venues. Some specific advice:

> Some caterers will bring a grill/tent set-up and cook right on site – how A M A Z I N G is this? This set-up ensures food will be freshly made for your guests. Other vendors will bring food already made at their facility and transport it to the barn [not as fresh – but still yummy!]

> Barn venues may have restrictions on how loud a DJ or band may play, therefore, hire a DJ who has had experience with this type of venue. Also, look for a DJ who has experience with outdoor ceremonies and equipment that can withstand the “wind” noise.

> When considering your make-up/hair artists, hire someone who can keep your make-up and hair in place despite the weather elements.

> Last, but not least, hiring someone who is going to capture the magical moments from your day! When hiring a photographer, it is important to hire someone who has had experience with the barn type venue. Lighting can be a challenge and photographing with the elements [heat and rain], can be a tricky. Consider asking your photographer if you can view an entire album from a wedding they have photographed at a barn venue [this way, you know they aren’t showing you just their very best photos].

MN Barn Wedding Photo

10. Cleanup

Depending on your venue choice, you may have to clean-up the venue the night of your wedding, and remove all items that you had brought in, including décor, presents/cards, floral, food, etc. Plan for someone to help designate the clean-up effort, so that you aren’t tacked on with any extra clean up fees, or make sure your wedding planning team can take care of it.

11. Bonus Tip

One more bonus tip because we just have so much to share! When putting together your seating chart, we always recommend assigned seating for your guests, to make their dining experience a G R E A T one! One common mistake we see is that guest names are listed by table number vs. alphabetical order. This layout forces guests to have to look at all the tables/names to find their own. Instead, consider putting guest names in alphabetical order by their last name, to ensure guests can find their tables/names with ease. Also, we recommend using a list/frame type style vs. place cards. At barn venues, the barn doors are usually wide open to let the natural breeze in and this provides the perfect opportunity for fly-away place cards. When deciding on what will be used for your actual table numbers, consider something large enough to be seen from a distance, and something that is stable against the elements as well [have these placed on the table facing the door that guests will be entering from].

Rustic Barn Wedding Photography | Courtney + Blake

By Joanna Carina

Barn Wedding Photography

Courtney + Blake were in my circle for a few years before I ever got the chance to meet them. Courtney works with my husband, and once she and Blake were engaged they wanted to meet and talk about their rustic wedding day. I was so incredibly excited when they decided to hire me as their wedding photographer! They are so sweet, fun and down-to-earth, I couldn’t wait for their big day.

We began working together with their engagement photography session at Father Hennepin Bluff Park and the Stone Arch Bridge. They frequented the park because they walked their sweet doggie Jägr there, so the place was a natural fit for their photos.

Barn Wedding Day

Their rustic wedding was held at Courtney’s parents’ farm and home out in Cokato MN. The weather could not have been more perfect on the big day. And every detail of their event was picture-perfect. (It helps when the bride and her mom both work in the home decor design business!) They held their preparation time in the beautiful farm house. Then their first look was held under the maple trees in the front yard of the house. Next, we spent some time on their couple portraits. We then worked on bridal party and family portraits. It was so much fun wandering around their beautiful property and finding amazing locations to photograph! I particularly loved the wide open fields as a beautiful backdrop, as well as the old Finnish sauna!

Their rustic wedding ceremony was so beautiful. They were married at the edge of the hill overlooking the barn, sauna and fields below. After the ceremony, everyone headed down to the barn for cocktail hour. Dinner was followed by joyful and tearful toasts, and also a rousing shoe game. Then dancing was up next until late into the night.

Thank You!

Courtney + Blake, thank you so much for including me as your wedding photographer on one of the biggest days of your lives. I am so happy for you as you begin your new lives together!

Rum River Barn & Vineyard Wedding Photography | Lauren + Wes

By Joanna Carina

Rum River Barn and Vineyard Wedding Photos

“Look how handsome you are!” Those were the first words from Lauren when she saw Wes for the first time before their wedding ceremony. They were the cutest bundle of hugs, adoration and kisses during their Rum River Barn & Vineyard wedding photos. They were so cute too as we spent time wandering around taking portraits among the grapevines and hay bales prior to their beautiful wedding ceremony.

Rum River Barn and Vineyard Wedding

Wes + Lauren’s wedding took place on a crisp October day at the Rum River Barn & Vineyard in Hillman, MN. The barn and vineyard grounds were spectacularly gorgeous, especially with the fall color and light. The girls got ready in the cute bridal suite building while the guys were getting ready in the little house. Guests were able to meander around the barn and grounds, passing their time playing home-made, over-sized jenga and other lawn games.

The sun had just begun setting behind them as Wes + Lauren gave their vows in a clearing of trees in front of their friends and loved ones. Their ceremony site was set in a half-circle. The two of them stood under the adorable birch arbor while they were married by their newly-ordained friend (an awesome trend I have been seeing more and more!)

Rum River Barn and Vineyard Reception

Once their ceremony was over, guests were able to enjoy cocktails and snacks. Dinner and toasts were followed up by dancing away into the night. It was so fitting as we left for the evening to look up and see a gorgeous star-filled sky over the warm, glowing barn that echoed the sounds of music and laughter over the fields.

Thank You!

Wes + Lauren, I am so happy for the two of you as you begin your new life journey together. And I thank you so much for including me as your wedding photographer for your Rum River Barn and Vineyard wedding photos on one of the biggest days of your lives. I also loved your Bryant Lake Regional Park engagement photos so much. I wish you every happiness together!

Barns of Old Glory Wedding Photography | Shane + Mandy

By Joanna Carina

Barns of Old Glory Wedding Photography

I’ve known Shane for many years, being one of my husband’s good friends. When he and his girlfriend Mandy got engaged, I was SO happy for them! And then, of course, when they asked me to be their wedding photographer I was even happier! I was excited to work with them on their Barns of Old Glory wedding photos.

Barn Wedding Photography

Their wedding ceremony took place at the cabin of Shane’s parents outside of Chatfield, MN. The ceremony was held beside a quaint little stream on an amazing summer’s day. We then headed over to the Barns of Old Glory in St Charles, MN. The venue is a lovingly and impeccably restored farm with several barns including a bridal suite “villa”, a large reception barn, petting zoo, hayrides and more! The baby animal in the petting zoo were a particular favorite. There was plenty of fun for all their wedding guests to have an awesome experience!

Thank You!

Thank you so much, Shane + Mandy, for choosing to work with me on your Barns of Old Glory wedding photos. I am ridiculously happy for you guys, and I wish you the happiest life together!
