St Paul Hotel Indian Wedding Photography | Madina + Omkar

By Joanna Carina 1 Comment

Minneapolis Indian Wedding Photography

Today is part three of my blog series on Madina + Omkar’s spectacular Minneapolis Indian wedding photography celebration. Make sure to take a look at the other blogs posts. Part one features their Muslim wedding ceremony. And part two shows their Hindu wedding ceremony.

Saint Paul Hotel Wedding Photography

Madina + Omkar held their Indian wedding reception at the St Paul Hotel. Madina prepped in the L’Etoile Suite and Omkar in another room of the beautiful hotel. Omkar wore a sharp black and white tux, while Madina wore a magnificent custom gown with lace and crystals throughout.

Once the two of them were ready, we took them across the street to Rice Park for their first look and portraits, followed by group photos. Then we were able to head back to the St Paul Hotel for their gorgeous reception. And really, the word “gorgeous” is such an understatement. It was truly a jaw-dropping, opulent event!

Saint Paul Hotel Wedding Reception

Madina + Omkar’s reception was held in the St Paul Hotel ballroom. Walking into the room, I think my eyes popped right out of my head! The center of the room featured their stunning, gold-adorned, six-tiered wedding cake. The tables were set so elegantly with custom menu cards, gold chargers, and floral centerpieces. The lighting featured ornate gobos on the ceiling as well as a custom gobo with their names and monogram. They included six different color changes throughout the evening. And the pinnacle of the room was the custom-built pergola over Madina + Omkar’s sweetheart table. It was draped in gold fabric and topped with live flowers. Inside was a gorgeous crystal chandalier. Simply spectacular!

After dinner, Madina + Omkar received numerous toasts, love and blessings from their guests. The two of them gave thanks for everyones’ support and love through the years. So many tears of joy! The toasts were followed by Madina + Omkar’s first dance, then their parent dances as well as an anniversary dance. Then they were able to dance the night away.

Thank You!

Such a fun day with Madina + Omkar as their Minneapolis Indian wedding photographer! Stay tuned to my next blog post which features their beautiful Como Park wedding portraits.

Landmark Center Wedding Photos | Chris + Antonio

By Joanna Carina 5 Comments

Landmark Center Wedding Photography

Chris + Antonio wanted to pull out all the stops for their wedding day. It had to be gorgeous. It had to be epic. And in every way, it was all that and more! They held their big day at the Landmark Center in St Paul, MN. The Landmark Center is really one of the most spectacular wedding venues in Minnesota. The grand columns, five-story glass-covered courtyard, marble and carved mahogany make for such a stunning wedding venue. And Chris + Antonio wanted their Landmark Center wedding photos dressed up further with beautiful draping, candles, flowers, gold tablecloths, chair covers – you name it!

Landmark Center Wedding Preparation

We began their day with preparations in separate rooms of the building. Once Chris + Antonio were ready, we headed over to the rustic Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary for their first look. This hidden gem of a location is a perfect combination of natural beauty, rustic stone and railroad bridges. Chris + Antonio loved that it mirrored the same ambiance as their Mill Ruins Park engagement photos last year.

Chris + Antonio’s first look was pretty much as epic as their entire wedding day. There were tears, hugs and kisses. Their joy was so radiant! Every person present could feel their love and happiness. Afterward, we headed back to Rice Park as well and the James J Hill Center to photograph them with their families and friends.

Landmark Center Wedding Ceremony

Then it was on to the big ceremony. The Landmark Center was spectacular in decor and detail. The cheers from the audience once they were married were thunderous! Next up were cocktails, an amazing dinner and finally toasts. Again, the love between them, as well as from their family and friends, was simply glowing. The fun was followed by an amazing dance party – the floor never stopped being filled to capacity!

Thank You!

Chris + Antonio, I am so happy for the two of you as you join your lives together. Thank you so much for hiring me as your Minneapolis wedding photographer. I wish you every happiness in life, and congratulations on your big day!

Saint Paul Hotel, Church of the Assumption + Minnesota History Center Wedding Photos | Jamie + Tim

By Joanna Carina Leave a Comment

Saint Paul Hotel Wedding Photos

Rain. Rain, rain, and more rain. Jamie + Tim’s wedding day was full of rain. Fortunately, rain on a wedding day symbolizes good luck. Also, fortunately, they had three gorgeous venues for their day. We were able to capture beautiful St Paul Hotel wedding photos, Church of the Assumption wedding photos, and Minnesota History Center wedding photos despite the rain!

We started the day at The Saint Paul Hotel. Following their wedding prep, we held Jamie + Tim’s first look in the grand hotel lobby. The lobby is filled with chandeliers, flowers, a sweeping staircase and gorgeous golden mirror and other accents. We were also able to photograph the wedding party in front of the stunning marble fireplace.

Church of the Assumption Wedding Ceremony

Next was Jamie + Tim’s beautiful wedding ceremony held at the Church of the Assumption in St Paul. Such a spectacular, traditional church built in the 1800s. The ceremony was complete with elegant singing, an enormous, regal pipe organ and even a trumpeter.

Minnesota History Center Wedding Reception

Lastly, Jamie + Tim’s wedding reception was held at the Minnesota History Center. The gorgeous venue was the perfect backdrop for their celebratory bash. Floor-to-ceiling windows, marble and granite, blush pink and gold accents, and even fun history aesthetics including an enormous vintage airplane and postcard decor. Cocktail hour was followed by dinner, complete with toasting full of laughter and tears of joy. Afterward, everyone danced the night away. It was fun to see my former couple Safiyyah + Rory. I met Jaime as Safiyya’s maid of honor at their Aria wedding last year!

Jamie + Tim, you are such a picture of happiness and I wish you the best as you begin your new lives together. I am so happy for you both, and also thankful to you for hiring me as your Minneapolis wedding photographer on your amazing wedding day!

Trellis Wedding Stillwater Photos | Vicki + Xo

By Joanna Carina Leave a Comment

Trellis Wedding Stillwater MN Photos

The first time I walked into Trellis Outdoor Wedding Ceremonies, in Stillwater MN, I was in awe. I was meeting Vicki + Xo for their final walkthrough meeting before their wedding day. A stone trail through the mossy woods opened into a gorgeous garden filled with trees, shrubs, plants, benches, fountains, statues and more. Everything was so picturesque, it definitely didn’t feel as though we were in Minnesota anymore. I was even more excited to capture Vicki + Xo’s Trellis Outdoor Wedding Ceremonies Photos!

Trellis Wedding Ceremony

The two of them prepared in separate rooms of the adorable cottage at Trellis Weddings. Their first look was held under the shade of the trees. They were so excited, they just beamed when they saw each other. Then we wandered around the beautiful Trellis gardens photographing the two of them. We then moved on to bridal party and family portraits until it was time to prepare for their ceremony.

Vicki + Xo’s ceremony was held under the beautiful white tent on the Trellis grounds. The highlights included vows they wrote to their three children. Several guests needed their tissues! The kids were so happy – they were full of laughs, hugs and tears of joy as well.

St Croix Riverboat Wedding Reception

Afterward, a trolly carried the entire wedding party over to the St Croix Boat Co. Their reception was held on the Majestic Star. Following dinner and toasts, the group danced the night away as the boat sailed the St Croix during a gorgeous June evening. A spectacular sunset was the perfect cap to the night.

Vicki + Xo, I am so happy for you as you begin your new lives joined as a beautiful family. I am so honored you chose to work with me as your Minneapolis wedding photographer. I wish you a beautiful life full of laughter and love.

Top 10 Things to Look for When Hiring a Wedding Photographer | Carina Photographics

By Joanna Carina 8 Comments

Top 10 Considerations When Hiring a Wedding Photographer

Welcome to the wild and sometimes crazy world of wedding planning! I would like to share a helpful roadmap full of some insider tips about what I consider to be the top 10 things to look for when you are looking to hire your Minneapolis wedding photographer:

1. PORTFOLIO

This first one is a given. You are drawn to photos that you like, of course. Make sure to really look through the wedding photographer’s images and try to describe, even just to yourself, what it is that attracts you to these images. Look at elements such as posing, expression, lighting, composition, color, exposure, etc.

Minneapolis MN Wedding Photography Gallery

2. PERSONALITY

When you meet with a wedding photographer, how well do you click? Is it easy to talk to him/her, or do things feel disconnected and awkward? Does their working style fit with what you envision? Do you like the ideas they propose for working together? Do you feel confident that they can do an excellent job with your wedding day? Plan to spend a few minutes chatting to get to know him/her and see how you mesh. Remember, your photographer will be the one vendor you are with the majority of your day, not to mention during other meetings, your engagement session, etc, so you should find someone you can connect with and trust that they will work well for you!

3. INSURANCE

Make sure to check that the wedding photographer is insured – both for liability as well as equipment. If a guest (or even you!) were to get hurt, who would cover medical bills? And if the photographer were to have gear broken or stolen during your event, would he/she request that you help with the cost? You want to make sure to be covered against anything imaginable, so always verify that a photographer is fully insured.

Minneapolis MN Wedding Photographer's Insurance

4. BACKUPS

Another form of “insurance” is having full backup equipment. Not just limited to an extra camera body, does the wedding photographer also have extra lenses, extra lighting, extra memory cards and batteries, etc? There isn’t one moment to be missed during a wedding, so photographers have to be able to grab new equipment at the drop of a hat if the need arises.

Minneapolis MN Wedding Photographer Camera Gear

5. PRICE

There are as many pricing strategies as there are wedding photographers. Some photographers price in packages, and others price a la carte. Some include digital files or albums, some do not. Make sure to discuss with your fiancé(e) what you are hoping to receive from your wedding photographer. Also, make sure to discuss whether you have a set budget in mind, or if you want to compare value of various photographers. Lastly, make sure that the photographer’s price is not the only option you consider when you are shopping around. We have heard horror stories of what happened when people have hired purely on price. Just remember that your wedding photography will be the only keepsake left from your wedding day, so make sure all of these factors are weighted equally.

6. HOURS OF COVERAGE

Some wedding photographers price their coverage hourly. Some give “full day coverage”. And others give packages with a set number of hours. It helps to have a ballpark idea in mind of what you are hoping for, but make sure to request that your photographer help with planning out the timeline of your wedding day. Then you need to clarify how much of the day you actually want your photographer present. For example, do you need your photographer present during your visit to the hair salon in the morning? Or do you want your photographer present up until the very last dance is finished, lights are brought up and guests are leaving? In our experience, 8-10 hours of photography coverage will ensure you get the majority of the important details from your wedding day.

Minneapolis MN Wedding Photography Hours Included

7. NUMBER OF PHOTOGRAPHERS

Unless your wedding is very small (max 50 guests), many weddings would do well to have two photographers present. From having more details and candid moments captured, to having both bride AND groom expressions captured during first looks and walking down the aisle, some images are only possible when there are two photographers present.

8. ALBUMS

A wedding album is the most important keepsake you can receive from your wedding day – don’t underestimate its importance as your first family heirloom. Make sure to review the quality of the albums of the photographer. Look at cover materials, paper finish and thickness, number of pages, the style/design of the layout, whether it includes a box or other protective case, binding quality, etc. There is a vast range of albums available, so make sure you will be getting great quality and value in your biggest family heirloom from your wedding day.

Minneapolis Wedding Photography Album

9. PRODUCT OPTIONS

Also make sure to review the full range of product options offered by the photographer. Do they offer both wedding AND engagement albums? Prints, canvas, metals or other wall art? Digital images or not? Parent albums, gift albums, greeting cards, or any other extras? Sometimes it’s hard to know what you might want to order from your wedding images, so make sure that you have a good variety of options that you are interested in considering when the time comes.

Minneapolis Wedding Photography Products Image Boxes

10. PROFESSIONAL

This last item might be the most important. Make sure that work with a professional wedding photographer. I know that the term can be widely interpreted. (Full-time? Part-time? Occasional? How many weddings have they photographed? etc.) Asking a friend or relative with a DSLR to be your photographer, if they have no experience photographing weddings, can potentially lead to disaster and you could end up with no or very few usable photos from your wedding day. For some people, photography may not be that important, so it may not matter if you have photos to look back on from your day. But if you do want to make sure you get beautiful, high-quality photos artistically capturing every facet of your wedding day, make sure that you can trust that your photographer is a professional and can work through any scenario or challenge that may be presented.

More Info

I hope this road map and tips will be helpful to you as you navigate your way through the world of Minneapolis wedding photographers. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about working together for your big day, contact me soon. Best of luck and happy wedding planning!

Minneapolis Portrait Photography Studio | Carina Photographics

By Joanna Carina 4 Comments

St Paul Photography Studio

The 2014 year was very busy for me and my wedding and portrait photography business. As the year neared its close, I realized I could no longer go on holding client meetings in poorly-lit coffee shops and loud restaurants. I also never had a good indoor location for portrait sessions, image reveals or other meetings. It seemed that the time was right to begin looking for my own photography studio.

My first step was meeting and interviewing several studios around town who were looking for an additional photographer. I then also started looking into options for renting my own studio. The Vandalia Tower building, located on Vandalia Street at the 94 exit in St Paul, had an awesome option for me. The building was undergoing a major remodel. And they had great plans underway, including Lake Monster Brewing and the Paikka event space. I opted to lease my own studio there beginning in 2015. I know it’s been over a year, so I finally should blog about this major event!

St Paul Wedding Photographer Studio

To say that I love my studio is an understatement. It’s an awesome space! A friend helped with the buildout so I could customize the space to suit me. Then the floors were polished and coated white. I added a small room in the center. It could be used for hair/makeup artists to work with my clients as well as a client changing room. And then my much-needed front room is my meeting space, product sample showroom. I love being able to have Image Reveal Sessions projected directly on my wall. All-in-all, it is truly awesome!

The back of my studio is the shooting area. I’ve got numerous backdrops, props and seating. Everything is set against the gorgeous light coming from a huge set of warehouse windows in the back wall. I’ve also got full studio lighting and blackout curtains in case I need to control the light in a more detailed way.

My studio is so awesome. I am so excited to share it with everyone. Please take a moment to contact me if you’d like to visit. I would love to meet with you (and photograph you) in my studio soon!

Cedarhurst Mansion Wedding Photos | Deb + Bryan

By Joanna Carina 1 Comment

Cedarhurst Mansion Wedding Photography

I worked with Deb + Bryan for their Cedarhurst Mansion wedding photos. The stately Cedarhurst Mansion, in Cottage Grove, was designed by Cass Gilbert, the architect who also designed the MN State Capital building. It is over one century old, and has hosted four US Presidents. It made for a perfect backdrop for Deb + Bryan to join their lives together.

After spending the day with Deb + Bryan, their infectious laughter set my cheeks were on fire! Abundant jokes and one-liners are the name of the game whenever they’re around. Their beautiful day was full of laughter, joking, love and yes, even a few tears.

Cedarhurst Mansion Wedding Ceremony

The two of them prepared for their day in various rooms of the building. They opted not to do a First Look, but to first see each other when walking down the aisle. They had their ceremony in the garden behind the building. When Deb started to tear up upon seeing Bryan, he only needed to break out in his infectious laughter and it was enough to get Deb laughing too. After the ceremony, a cocktail reception was held in the neighboring garden. Meanwhile, we took Deb + Bryan around the Cedarhurst Mansion grounds for couple portraits, as well as family and wedding party portraits.

Cedarhurst Mansion Wedding Reception

Their cocktail hour was followed by an amazing dinner and cake cutting. Looking through the photos, you will notice a small homage to the Star Wars movies. Their cake is topped by a set of bride and groom AT-ATs, complete with veil and tophat! They ended up with a night of dancing in the beautiful Cedarhurst ballroom. Deb + Bryan’s wedding day was so beautiful down to the last detail.

Thank You!

Thank you so much, Deb + Bryan, for including me as your Minneapolis wedding photographer! I loved your Cedarhurst Mansion wedding photos, as well as your fun Lebanon Hills Regional Park engagement photos. And I am so happy for you both as you begin your new lives together!

James J Hill Center Wedding Styled Photoshoot | Carina Photographics

James J Hill Center Wedding Styled Photoshoot

Last winter, our wedding season was slowing down and most Minnesotans were hibernating to stay away from the cold. A group of wedding vendors was itching to collaborate on a fun wedding project together. I met with Maddie at Ask for the Moon Events to talk about ideas. Soon afterward, she had whipped together an amazing team of wedding vendors to collaborate for a James J Hill Center wedding styled photoshoot. Our concept was, naturally, a literary-themed event. We were inspired by imagery of classic romance novels such as Gone With the Wind, Wuthering Heights, and many others. I was lucky enough to know the most perfect real-life couple who were excited for the chance to model for us.

St Paul Wedding Styled Photoshoot

A perfectly warm, early spring day in April framed the amazing classic architecture at the downtown St Paul landmark. Our host, Dawn of the James J Hill Center, was more than gracious and allowed us the freedom to design their venue as we saw fit. We’ve got our photos set to be published in several online publications soon, so watch my Facebook and Instagram pages for notifications of full articles.

What an amazing day, I had so much fun as your Minneapolis wedding photographer. Thank you so much team!

Garden Wedding Styled Photoshoot | Mary + Lisa

By Joanna Carina Leave a Comment

Garden Wedding Styled Photoshoot

Mary + Lisa were originally married in Canada in 2006. It was a time when laws would not allow them to be married in the United States. Their best option was to cross the nearest border. They visited a Justice of the Peace and then had a few snapshots taken together before a small celebration, and that was that.

Fast-forward eight years to 2014 when a group of Minneapolis wedding professionals decided to put together a styled wedding photoshoot. We had access to an amazing English formal garden located in Stockholm WI. The garden had been lovingly built from the ground up over the past 25 years by owners Tim and Bruce, who created their perfect European getaway in small-town Wisconsin. They loved spending weekends here after a short drive from their home in Minneapolis. Their spectacular garden and original 1700’s farmhouse had garnered some attention in the past from national magazines as well as the town’s locals. They even occasionally rent it out for wedding celebrations. So naturally we were enamored with the property and thought it would be perfect for our photoshoot!

MN Wedding Styled Photoshoot

Mary + Lisa were so excited to work with us for our formal garden wedding styled photoshoot. They said they felt they were given a chance to have the wedding they never had. It was as if they were married all over again! I was so honored to be the Minneapolis Wedding Photographer for their photoshoot. Congratulations again, and thank you for working with us Mary + Lisa! We are so happy for you and your adorable family.

Minneapolis Infrared Wedding Photography | Carina Photographics

Minneapolis Infrared Photography

Today I’d like to highlight something that I’ve been doing for awhile now but haven’t talked about too much on my website. I offer something special to my clients that is really fun and unique – infrared photography. What is infrared photography?

Infrared photography is a special type of photography. A camera must be altered to be sensitive to only the infrared wavelengths of light. In layman’s terms, it means that the images you see are altered color-wise. When you are using infrared photography in natural scenes with a lot of greenery – such as grass, plants and trees – the green shows up as white. This give them images a dreamy, storybook, otherworldly feeling. I process the photos into black and white, but the white grass, plants and trees really makes them pop out and feel unique. My clients often gasp at the sight of them. Once we turn them into a canvas, metal print or framed art, they are truly a sight to behold.
